I have been contacted by members of a Cycling group campaigning for “Space for Cycling” calling for safer provision for cyclists in our Towns. Cllr Helen Flynn (Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Harrogate and Knaresborough Constituency) is an enthusiastic supporter of the idea that Harrogate and Knaresborough can become “Cycling Towns” and has called for Harrogate Council to commission a feasibility plan which has the support of a number of local cycling groups. You may read Helen’s blog on her web site and below is an extract:- “I have been working with the Sustrans office in Leeds to see how we can progress plans for making Harrogate into a cycle town and link it to Knaresborough. Government has been making funding available through different schemes for cycling initiatives for some time. But those authorities without a full feasibility plan for projects are always left at the bottom of the queue when it comes to funding allocation. If we are serious about wanting to become a proper cycle town, then we have to put our money where our mouth is and invest in a feasibility plan. It’s the vital first step.”

In regard to cycling to work in the rush hours we have to be realistic and accept that many of our roads particularly in urban areas are not capable of being improved to such a degree to accommodate cyclist lanes, however there is still much that can be done subject to funding being available. In the Harrogate District I believe that we need a new plan and strategy for the improvement of cycling provision across the District rather than apply piecemeal solutions here and there.
